Program of Study
The Associate of Applied Science Degree Physical Therapist Assistant program prepares graduates for a career as a Physical Therapist Assistant. A physical therapist assistant performs a broad range of skilled clinical services under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist and in a variety of health settings including hospital-based acute and outpatient; skilled nursing facilities; sub-acute rehabilitation hospitals; privately owned outpatient clinics; and home health agencies. Physical therapist assistants administer the patient treatment and interventions as directed by the supervising physical therapist; collect measures and other patient-related data; progress the patient within the parameters established by the supervising physical therapist; and document the treatment appropriately.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE). Graduates must pass the NPTE and a jurisprudence exam in order to become licensed as a physical therapist assistant in the state of Ohio. The jurisprudence exam is a test of the state’s laws and rules that pertain to physical therapy practice.
The faculty has identified the following Learning Outcomes for all graduates:
- Achieve entry-level competence in all criteria as specified in the PTA Clinical Performance Instrument.
- Exhibit professional conduct reflective of a commitment to meeting the expectations of members of society receiving health care services.
- Demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skills and behaviors inherent to the provision of physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.
