Academic and Career Services

Academic and Career Advising 

Academic and Career Advising

Academic and Career Advisors assist new, returning, and continuing students in exploring their education and occupation goals, problem-solving efforts, planning their program of study and revisiting their developing academic and career plan, and scheduling classes. They also provide information and refer students to appropriate services. New students must make an appointment to meet with an Academic and Career Advisor before they can register for classes.  Advisors are assigned to students and work with them from the time of their enrollment to the College through graduation. Students can find their assigned advisors, both Admissions and Academic, on Banner Self-Service or Watermark. It is highly recommended that all students meet with their Academic and Career Advisor or Faculty Advisor prior to registering for classes each term.  To make an appointment call, 419.559.2345, email advising@terra.edu, or stop by the Academic Service Center in Building B, room 105 for assistance.

Academic Service Center

Tutoring, Testing, Learning Labs, and Transfer Center are all services located in the Academic Service Center. These services are located in Building B, General Technologies Building, Rooms 105 and 108. Some tests may have associated fees. Please direct all calls regarding these services to 419-559-2109, the Academic Service Center or emial academicservicecenter@terra.edu.

Tutoring

Any Terra State student who is experiencing academic difficulties in a subject area or course may receive tutoring services in their area of specific need. Tutoring may take place one-on-one, in small group settings, or remotely, depending on the demand for a particular course. Information to access these services is available through the Academic Service Center. Students wanting assistance of a tutor should send an email to tutoring@terra.edu and provide their name, phone number, and course(s) for which they need assistance. In addition, the Academic Service Center is always looking for qualified students to become tutors, pending individual interviews. Student Employment applications are available in Career Services in Roy Klay Hall, Room A100, upon request. Students may set up tutoring by stopping at the Academic Service Center or by emailing tutoring@terra.edu

Testing

Testing is located within the Academic Service Center (B105) and provides a place to take tests missed during a regular class period. All tests must be distributed through the instructor.

To take a test in the Academic Service Center, a student must present a valid Terra State ID, driver’s license, or other picture ID. Students may not take a test without a valid ID. Arrangements should be made between the instructor and the student prior to the student’s arrival to the testing area, and tests that are not taken by the “due date” are returned to the instructor. Only instructor-permitted materials are allowed in the Testing area. All other items must be stored in the lockers provided on-site or placed in an alternative Students needing accommodations - i.e. Reader, quiet room needs to make arrangements with ASC prior to testing.

Learning Labs

The Learning Labs, which are located within the Academic Service Center (B105), provide free math, writing, and other academic assistance to all students at Terra State. Students receive free assistance with their academic classes.  The Learning Labs offers walk-in service on a first-come, first-served basis. Both full- and part-time faculty staff the lab. Hours are established and posted in the Academic Service Center. Students may schedule an appointment with the labs by stopping at the Academic Service Center or by emailing tutoring@terra.edu

Transfer Center

The Transfer Center, located within the Academic Service Center, offers Terra State students the opportunity to get information regarding various four-year institution partners. This allows Terra State students to further their knowledge about the transfer process. Additionally, Bluffton University, Franklin University, Grand Canyon University, Herzing University, and Ohio University/Athens visit on a regular basis.  Tiffin University has regular hours housed in the Transfer Center. Students interested in meeting with a representative from a partner institution should stop by the Academic Service Center.

Career Development

Students seeking assistance with career direction can obtain guidance in the Academic Service Center located in General Technologies Building, Room B105. Assessments related to interests, abilities, and values are used to assist students in this process. Detailed information related to occupations is available through a variety of sources.

Terra State also has a partnerships with Ohio Means Jobs. Student can meet with a representative of Ohio means jobs to discuss career opportunities and resume writing. To explore current “hot jobs”, look at future job outlook forecasts and search openings, students can access the State “Ohio Means Jobs/Internships” job board. 

The Career Services office assists students and alumni with the job search process including resume writing and interviewing. On-campus workshops, job fairs, and special events are offered throughout the year to assist students and community members.

 

Counseling Center

Terra State Community College offers free on-campus counseling for students. To schedule an appointment, call 419-559-2342 or email counseling@terra.edu.

Terra State Community College has partnered with ProMedica to offer comprehensive, short-term FREE counseling services for students! Confidential counseling sessions can be accessed via telephone, video, or in-person to fit a student’s schedule and location needs. Crisis support is also available 24/7 by telephone. Students can call 1.866.327.3759 any time, any day to get connected.

Additionally, if you encounter a student experiencing a mental health crisis or concern, know that you have many options for connecting an individual with beneficial outreach and services. Here’s a helpful outline as you manage student crises and mental health concerns.

THE STUDENT EXPRESSES A CONCERN BUT NEEDS GUIDANCE IN PERSON

As Terra State Community College is a residential college, faculty, and staff play an especially important role in being aware of and responsive to students who may be struggling. Without mental health training, you may feel unprepared to address signs of distress or problematic behavior in your students. The following is intended to provide helpful guidelines for dealing with such situations. In addition, the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) welcomes your questions on any issues regarding behavior that concerns you.

Students in Distress

All of us experience a “bad day” now and then, and usually it is only a short time to recover a more positive attitude and the ability to cope with a situation. Sometimes, however, the bad day persists and we begin to see signs of ongoing distress and poor coping:

  • Drop in grades or performance;
  • Excessive procrastination,
  • Disappearance from class or regular activities;
  • Excessive weight gain or loss;
  • Withdrawal and isolative behavior;
  • Focus on suicide or harmful behaviors;
  • Neglect of appearance or hygiene;
  • Strange or inappropriate behavior;
  • Inappropriate dependency;
  • Impaired speech or disjointed thoughts;
  • Unstable mood;
  • Including depression;
  • Irritability;
  • Anxiety;
  • Tearfulness

These behaviors may be related to ongoing depression or anxiety and may be due to problems in relationships, past trauma, addictions, eating disorders, grief, and loss etc.

What to Do

When you observe behavior that points to ongoing distress, addressing it with the student can go a long way toward supporting and encouraging the person to get the help they need. Don’t assume that someone else in the student’s life will intervene.

Communicate your concerns: If appropriate, talking with the student in private about what is upsetting to them may make help them feel more comfortable and more open with you. Be direct about your concerns, focusing on the student’s behavior and your concerns for their welfare. Listen to the student’s concerns while acknowledging the limits of your ability to help. You must also be aware of your own comfort level. Know your own boundaries and refer to the Campus Safety and Security Office when necessary.

Refer to the Counseling Service:

When one of your students shares difficulties that are beyond your ability to help, or when a student’s behavior suggests serious emotional problems, it may be best to refer the student to the Counseling Service.

Let the student know that you are concerned about their welfare, but that the problem is beyond your field of expertise. Indicate that counseling may help them deal with the situation more effectively. Finally, suggest an initial meeting or call with a counselor to see if it may be useful.

Sometimes simply giving someone a name to call is sufficient; at other times, actually making a call to the Counseling Service while you are meeting with a student is effective. If you aren’t sure that the student will follow through, you may want to call Campus Safety and Security to perform a wellness check on that student to ensure that the student is safe and is not a harm to self or others.

Refer to Behavior Intervention Team (BIT):

You may feel that talking with and encouraging a distressed student provides the boost that the student needs. You may find that a student is grateful to know about the services available to them with Promedica. You may find that the student follows through on your referral and you observe a positive change in him or her.

On the other hand, you may encounter situations that continue to concern you: students are not responsive to your concern, the behavior persists or escalates, and your own internal “concerning behavior flags” are raised.

Developmental Education

The Vanguard-Sentinel Aspire Program offers free adult education classes to all who are eligible. Aspire is a grant-funded program available for adults who need to sharpen their skills in preparation for the high school equivalence test, college, or a career. Aspire classes can be taken in English and/or mathematics (FOC0160). Please contact your Academic Advisor by emailing advising@terra.edu concerning this program. 

Disability Services

Terra State Community College provides auxiliary aids, accommodations and support services to students with documented disabilities in an effort to ensure that such students are not denied the benefits of or excluded from participation in any program or activity offered by the college.

To receive disability services, a student must disclose their claim of disability and request for accommodations to the Dean of Student Success through a formal consultation. At the initial consultation, students should provide current and valid documentation of the claimed disability. All documentation received will be treated as confidential information. A student who believes they may have a disability that is undiagnosed, undocumented or insufficiently documented should consult with the Dean for referral assistance. The Dean may choose to perform IQ testing to validate an undocumented disability. Reasonable accommodations are provided on a case-by-case basis.

Emotional Support Animal

Terra State Community College has a policy governing emotional support animals in accordance with local, state, and federal law. Student Employment Procedures

All student employment is dependent on availability of funding, open student positions, and completion of student FAFSA forms. 

All student employees must be considered in good academic standing by achieving a minimum cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.0.  In the case of a new student without a G.P.A., the first term of employment will be a probationary period with the expectation that this minimum will be met.  Students not maintaining this minimum will not be eligible for student employment until the following semester when the G.P.A. has been improved to the 2.0 minimum.  Any exceptions to this must be discussed and approved by the Financial Aid Office.

Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours to be eligible for student employment and should be degree or certificate seeking; this includes students who are registered as transfer students.  Under normal circumstances, students are limited to a maximum of 20 hours per work week during periods of enrollment.  Students may work during periods of non-enrollment provided they are enrolled in the next term.  Student employment may end when a student finishes their coursework at Terra State (i.e. graduates, completes certificate, or not enrolled for the following term).

The Human Resources office will contact the Financial Aid office to verify eligibility.

The Financial Aid office will determine eligibility and place students in a student position that fits the student’s degree program, experience, and/or students’ desired area of work.

After the determination is made, the Financial Aid office will send the student an email to update the student with the final decision.

If the student is approved for student employment, the student will go through the hiring process in the Human Resources office.  Students are not permitted to begin employment until the full hiring and onboarding processes are complete and approved by the Human Resources office.

Campus Safety & Security

Mission of Campus Safety & Security

 

Terra State Community College Safety & Security Responders are a safety and security team striving for the protection of the students, faculty, staff and visitors to the Terra State Community College campus, as well as our neighbors in the community. Our underlying goal is to uphold the rules and regulations of Terra State Community College, while maintaining a safe and educational environment. We will also continually work to maintain respect from our peers, the administration, local law enforcement and the surrounding community. The Campus Safety & Security Department is located on the first floor of the Engineering Technologies Building, E104 and is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The College encourages anyone who believes a crime or violation of college policy has occurred to report it to either the Fremont Police Department or Campus Safety and Security Department.

Campus Safety & Security has a close working relationship with the Fremont Police, Sandusky County Sheriff Department and Fremont Fire Department. Campus Safety and Security Officers are not police officers and do not maintain legal authority to arrest individuals. They do maintain the authority to detain any individual(s) if the need arises.

 

The Campus Safety& Security Office is charged with first line responsibility to:

 

  • Assure the safety & security of persons, including College employees and students, guest of and visitors to the Campus; 
  • Assure the safety, security, and protection of College property, including buildings, grounds, equipment, and other assets of the College, as well as non-College property located temporarily or permanently on College grounds;    
  • Respond to emergency situations or conditions and aid or take actions appropriate to the crisis situation within legal limits of the office’s authority.
In fulfilling these three primary responsibilities (protection of persons, protection of property, and emergency-response services), the duties of Campus Safety & Security Responders include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Patrolling campus grounds and the Terra Village Landings;

 

  • Conducting regular checks and inspections to insure building safety and security;

 

  • Reporting damage, malfunctions, faulty equipment or utilities, or any unusual or questionable or dangerous or suspicious conditions or activities anywhere on campus, indoors or outdoors;

 

  • Assisting all persons to comply with College regulations and rules of conduct on campus;

 

  • Providing security coverage for special College functions and athletic games as assigned by a direct-line supervisor;

 

  • Providing crowd control when necessary and as assigned, and traffic control by a direct-line supervisor;

 

  • Responding to requests for routine departmental services (e.g., unlocking a classroom for a person authorized to enter or vehicle un-locks).

 

  • Providing escort services for faculty, staff, visitors and students to promote safety. 
Basic Authority and Limits:

 

  • Jurisdiction- Campus Safety & Security Responders have jurisdiction on property owned or leased by Terra State Community College only.

 

  • Identification Requests - Campus Safety & Security Responders are authorized to request to see the identification of any person on campus property, whether that person is an employee or non-employee, student or non-student. Any College student who refuses to comply with a Campus Safety & Security Responder’s request for identification is subject to disciplinary action by the College. If the person is a non-student or non-employee and fails to provide identification, that person will be requested to leave campus property and if they do not comply, Fremont Police will be called. Safety & Security Responders do not possess arrest power. Criminal Incidents are referred to the local police who have jurisdiction on the campus. The Terra State Community College Campus Safety & Security Office maintains a highly professional working relationship with the Fremont Police Department, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, and other divisions of law enforcement within Sandusky County. All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to immediately report the crime to the Campus Safety & Security Office and the appropriate police agency. Prompt reporting will assure timely warning notices on-campus and timely disclosure of crime statistics.

 

  • Emergency Authority - In case of emergency, when no direct-line supervisor is immediately available, any senior leadership official on the scene shall assume responsibility for the situation and shall function in place of a direct-line supervisor until the latter arrives to take charge. (For present purposes, “Senior college official” refers to any senior leadership.) In the absence of a direct-line supervisor, the Campus Safety & Security Responder shall notify the chain of command and receive direction until a direct line supervisor or senior college official arrives. Any College student who refuses to comply is subject to disciplinary action by the College.

 

  • Campus Safety & Security Responders do not have the authority to enforce State and Local laws. Campus Safety & Security Responders only have the authority to enforce and uphold Terra State Community College policies. Campus Safety Responders can detain suspects until police arrival but have no power of arrest.
Legally Mandated Authority and Responsibility:
  • Employees of Terra State Community College Campus Safety & Security are mandated reporters set forth by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Under the Clery Act, members of Campus Safety are Campus Security Authorities. A Campus Security Authority is any individual or organization specified in an institution’s statement of campus security policy as an individual or organization to which students and employees should report criminal offenses, individuals with significant responsibility for student and campus activities Campus Security Authorities hold the primary responsibility to report allegations made in good faith to the reporting structure established by the institution.

Reporting Criminal Activity and Suspicious Behavior

General Procedures for reporting a crime or emergency
  • It is imperative that all crimes and suspicious activity be reported to either the Terra State Community College Campus Safety & Security Office or the Fremont Police Department. There are no current written agreements with the local police department regarding the investigation of alleged criminal investigations however, a written and signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) between local, state, county, and President of the College and the police can reduce crimes on campus. Members of the college community may report criminal activities or other emergencies in several different ways. While we encourage all campus community members to promptly report all crimes and other emergencies directly to the campus safety & security office or the Fremont Police Department, we recognize that some may prefer to report to other individuals or college offices. A list of titles of each person or organization to whom students and employees should report criminal offenses described in the law for the purpose of making timely warning reports and the annual statistical disclosure includes: student affairs/student conduct, campus safety, local police, coaches, athletic director, residence life staff, student activities staff, human resources staff, advisors to student organizations, and any other official with significant responsibility for student and campus activities. The information to be shared includes the date, the location of the incident (using Clery location categories), and the Clery crime category. This reporting protects the identity of the victim and may be done anonymously.
  • All incident reports involving students are forwarded to the Director of Campus Safety & Security or designee for review. Investigators will investigate a report when it is deemed appropriate.
  • Should criminal activities occur on campus during business hours (8 AM - 5 PM), students, visitors or employees should report details to the safety & security Office (419.559.2253 or extension 2253). Should criminal activities occur on campus after business hours, students, visitors or employees should report contact the Campus Safety & Security Responder on duty at 419-559-2253 If the situation is an emergency, contact the Fremont Police Department at 911 or 419.332.6464. 

 

  • All Crimes should be accurately and promptly reported to the Terra State Community College Campus Safety & Security Office or the appropriate police agency, when the victim of a crime elects to or is unable to, make such a reports

 

Confidential reporting

  • If you are witnessing a crime in progress, you should call 911 or Fremont Police at 419.332.6464. If you see a crime or suspicious activity occurring on campus and you would like to anonymously report it please call 419.559.2253 or email Security@terra.edu.      
  • If you are the victim of a crime and do not want to pursue action within the college system or the criminal justice system, you may want to consider making a confidential report. The purpose of a confidential report is to maintain confidentiality, while taking the steps to ensure the future safety of yourself and others. With such information, the college can keep an accurate record of the number of incidents involving students, employees, and visitors; determine where there is a pattern of crime with regard to a particular location, method, or assailant; alert the campus community of potential dangers. Reports filed in this manner are counted and disclosed in the annual crime statistics for the institution, and when they involve allegations of sexual harassment (including sexual violence) are made available to the College’s Title IX Coordinator.
Terra State Community College Behavioral Intervention Team

The Terra State Community College (TSCC) Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is comprised of specific faculty, staff, and administrative members and has been developed to promote a safe environment for the campus community that is focused on enhancing student learning and student development.
 

TSCC BIT

The Behavioral Intervention Team seeks to increase communication, collaboration, and coordination regarding behavior that raises concerns or disrupts the College learning environment. The BIT enhances campus safety and promotes success by providing a centralized listening and response function regarding concerning behavior. This includes providing resources and support to those dealing with the situations as they emerge, tracking and assessing incidents and patterns of incidents, responding to the individuals involved along BIT guidelines, and documenting.

All College employees (with limited exceptions), including faculty, administrators, staff, and residence advisors, are identified as mandated reporters and must report any incidents of possible sexual harassment, sex discrimination, or sexual violence in which they are aware. (Please see “Procedures” for reporting details)

Individuals are allowed to make anonymous reports; however, if a name is not provided, it may hamper the team’s ability to seek follow up information that may be critical in determining an appropriate course of action. If a name is provided the team may provide feedback regarding actions taken.

The Behavioral Intervention Team is a multidisciplinary team that meets regularly to serve five major functions for the College:

  1. Provide consultation and support to members of the College community in assisting individuals who display concerning or disruptive behaviors.
  2. Respond to reports, gather information to assess situations involving individuals who display concerning or disruptive behaviors; engage reported individuals in a process aimed at correcting the disturbing behavior.
  3. Recommend appropriate intervention strategies or disciplinary sanctions.
  4. Connect individuals with needed campus and community resources.
  5. Monitor ongoing behavior of individuals who have displayed disruptive or concerning behavior.

In any situation involving reporting, privacy concerns emerge. Privacy is a high priority of the BIT. Records and proceedings of the BIT are kept confidential and shared only on a “need to know” basis in a manner that is consistent with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and College policy and procedures. While every effort will be made to protect privacy of both the reporting individual and person of concern, situations that potentially involve danger or harm require that action be taken to protect those at risk.

Clery Act

Crime Statistics: The information below provides context for the crime statistics reported as part of compliance with the Clery Act.

The Jeanne Clery Act (formerly known as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990) requires colleges and universities to disclose an annual report highlighting crime statistics for the previous three (3) years, safety awareness programming, student conduct information, and other information on campus crimes and incidents. The statistics in this report are published in accordance with the standards and guidelines used by the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Handbook and relevant federal law. Terra State Community College submits the annual crime statistics published in this report to the Department of Education. The statistical information gathered by the Department of Education is available to the public through the Department of Education website.

The procedures for preparing the annual disclosure of crime statistics to the university community obtained from the following sources: The Fremont Police Department, Terra State Community College Campus Safety, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and other security and law enforcement departments responsible in the jurisdiction on our campus, separate campus, and non-campus locations. For statistical purposes, crime statistics reported to any of these sources are recorded in the calendar year the crime was reported.

Terra State Community College’s checklist for data collection provides that the coordinator of Clery Compliance will send a written request to the local police department(s) and Sheriff’s Office, requesting crime statistics for the main campus, the public property surrounding the campus and non-campus (by address) associated with the campus.

A written request for statistic information is made on an annual basis to all campus security authorities. A designated campus authority includes, but is not limited to College deans, directors, department heads, residence life staff, and safety officers. Statistical information is requested and provided to Campus Safety and Secruity by the employees at the local counseling center, even though they are not required by law to provide statistics for the compliance document. In addition, Campus Safety and Security works with the local counseling center to inform the persons that are being counseled of the procedures to report crimes on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the annual disclosure of crime statistics.

Under the “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act,” Terra State Community College must produce and distribute an annual report containing crime statistics and statements of security policy. This information can be found at www.terra.edu under Campus Safety (http://www.terra.edu/life_at_terra_state/student_services/campus_safety/annual_security_reports.php). Any questions can be referred to the Campus Safety Office, Room 104, Building E. Terra State Community College is strongly committed to providing a safe and secure environment for the campus community.

Services Provided by the Campus Safety and Security Office

Background Checks

Terra State Community College is able to provide background checks for students who are currently enrolled or entering the nursing, HIT, medical assisting, and phlebotomy programs, and students who are applying to Terra that have had a prior felony conviction. Lost and Found

All lost and found items may be turned into campus safety & security located in the Engineering Technologies Building room 104. Please keep in mind it is first critical for a person to retrace their steps, look in all areas, vehicles, and home.  Flash drives, and laptops will go to the IT help desk first to determine if a person can be identified.  Flash drives, laptops, iPad, tables will be kept for up to ten days, if no one claims the items then they will be sold and auctioned through Government Surplus at www.GOVDEALS.com. Earrings, earbuds, headphones, will be kept for a total of five days, due sanitary issues. Clothes will be held onto for a total of twenty days.  After an item’s day is up, it will be auctioned through Government Surplus.

Escort Service

Campus Safety & Security officers are available to provide escort services to and from any location on Terra State Community College Grounds and Landings. Please be patient when calling as we may be busy handling other calls. For escort services please call 419-559-2253.

Vehicle Assistance

If you lock your keys in your vehicle, please contact Fremont Police Department at 419.332.6464 to assist if you are the vehicles owner. If you are not the owner, you will need to have the owner present. If the owner cannot be present, you will need to contact Triple AAA at 1.888.222.6446. If you have a dead battery you will need to contact your insurance company or Triple AAA at 1.888.222.6446.

With a goal of raising awareness, supporting communities in the fight against drug addiction, Terra State Community College Campus Safety & Security carries and has access to Naloxone.

Terra State Alert System

In conjunction with Sandusky County, Terra State offers the Wireless Emergency Notification System (WENS) for students and staff to receive emergency alert notifications. These notifications will include weather-related and other unscheduled college closings, campus emergency alerts, and severe weather situations such as tornado and winter storm warnings. Campus Safety and Security is in charge of the Terra State Alert system.

Students, faculty, and staff are strongly encouraged to register for this free service. Once you register, Terra State can quickly send critical campus safety information directly to you. This information includes school closings and other safety threats. Not only will vital information be sent directly to you, but it will also be posted online.

For the safety of all, we encourage you to visit http://www.terra.edu/TerraAlert to enter your contact information and choose your notification preferences. This will ensure that you receive critical emergency notifications as soon as the College sends them. Anyone who had signed up for the system in the past (before October 20, 2019) will need to re-enter your information.

NOTE: Registration is FREE. Your service plan’s standard text messaging fees apply to all messages sent to your cell phone. The information you provide is not available to the public, and will only be used by public safety officials in event of an emergency.

Weather Delays and Cancellations

 

  • Student safety is a primary concern when determining closings due to weather. If classes are cancelled or postponed due to weather, announcements will be made through all Terra State Alert Notification systems, Terra State Community College Announcement Page, Social Media Pages and CANVAS. The College President will make the determination on closing campus for weather emergencies.

Campus Services

Bulletin Boards

Students may post information on the bulletin boards designated for student use in the student lounges, in the Student Activities Center and at various locations on campus. Information may include book lists, items for sale or trade, rooming requests or meeting news. Posters from outside organizations may be displayed on bulletin boards. Information posted on the bulletin boards will be removed periodically if it is outdated.

Terra State Community College will provide one (1) space for recognized student organizations to promote their group and group sponsored activities. This space will be provided in the connector area of Buildings A and B, and in other locations on campus.

• The Academic Service Center coordinates the usage and moderation of this space.
• Each Terra State Community College Student Organization will be responsible for the creation and revision of their individual space.
• If there comes a time when the number of student organizations outnumbers the amount of spaces, a monthly rotation schedule shall be implemented.
• Space shall be recognized and reserved for student organizations and/or student activities related information.

Bulletin board use will be monitored monthly. If no student organizations desires usage and space is available, the Academic Service Center will designate space as requested on a monthly basis.

CollegeStore

The CollegeStore is located in the General Technologies Building, Building B, on the first floor and accepts personal checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and Apple Pay.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the expanded CollegeStore hours before the start of each term and during the first week of the term to pick up books as part of the Follett ACCESS program. Please check your Terra email for details on Follett ACCESS. For store hours please call 419-559-2336 or visit our website at www.tsccshop.com.

Textbooks

Terra State participates in the Follett ACCESS program, providing students access to course materials from the first day of classes. When students register for classes they are opted into the Follett ACCESS Program. This means the students will be provided with the required materials for the class. The first option they would get is a digital copy of the book. if this is not available they will be provided with a rental hard copy of the book. If neither of the first two options are available they will be given a non rental copy of the book. 

The CollegeStore also will provide some required materials if they have been adopted into the Follett ACCESS Program. Things like uniforms for Medical Classes, a tool kit for the Machining Classes and other possible required materials. 

Students may refer to www.tsccshop.com to see what option of book is given for Follett ACCESS. They will not be able to purchase the items they would get as part of Follett ACCESS but they can purchase recommended items for the class. 

Students are able to use Financial Aid and student loans to purcahse reommended books and items in the store by transfering money to their student ID card. The student must go to their banner account and use the student tab. Then select the transfer excess money to student ID card. Once this is completed please allow one business day for the money to load as long as the funds are available.

 

Refunds or Exchanges

Textbooks

Save your receipt! You cannot get a refund without it. Please return your textbooks as soon as you know you will not need them. Another student may desperately need your books! Textbooks in resalable condition may be refunded with receipt within seven (7) calendar days from the start of classes or within two (2) days of purchase thereafter, including summer terms. Textbooks purchased during the last week of classes or during exam week are not eligible for return.

Computers and Software

All computer and software products are non refundable.

Apparel & Gifts

Apparel and gift items in resalable condition may be refunded or exchanged within 30 days with original receipt.

General Merchandise

All other general merchandise items in resalable condition may be refunded or exchanged within 30 days with the receipt.

Computer Labs

Specialized computer labs provide access to computers for classes and other purposes. Many open labs are available for student use: B307 on the third floor of Building B, General Technologies Building; A308 and A316 on the third floor of Building A, Roy Klay Hall; E210 and E214 on the second floor of Building E, the Engineering Building; D208 and D210 on the second floor of Building D, the Arts and Health Technology Center; I102 and I104 in Building I, the Skilled Trades Center. These labs are available for any student to use when a class is not in session, hours are as posted.

Individual computer workstations are located in the atrium on the third floor of Building B, General Technologies Building, as well as individual computer workstations in various locations around campus common areas available for use by any student during normal college operating hours.  The college library on the third floor of Building B, General Technologies Building, also has computers available for student use during posted library hours.

Students will need their Student I.D. Card and will be required to log in with their Terra-assigned account credentials. All computer users must review the Computer Services Acceptable Use Policy before logging in on any college computer.  When logging in to any campus computer the user must agree to comply with the Computer Services Acceptable Use Policy. 

Food/Dining Service

The Tree Tops Café, located on the second floor of the General Technologies Building, Building B, offers a varied menu selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Patrons can enjoy their food selection in the Café or get their food to go. The Tree Tops Café is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Friday 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. An online menu is available at www.terra.edu under Food Service/Tree Tops Café. The Tree Tops Café is closed on weekends and between terms. In addition, food vending machines are located in all buildings, and are in operation year-round.

ID Cards

All students are required to have a Terra State ID card and to carry it with them at all times when they are on campus. An ID card is required for service in all Terra State offices including, but not limited to, Records, Cashiers, Financial Aid. It is also needed to make use of the Student Activities Center, to check out books from the library, to use B-Atrium and library printing, and to use bookstore accounts. You may get your ID card by bringing a picture ID such as a driver’s license to Roy Klay Hall Room, Building A, Room A100. There is no cost for initial ID cards. Lost IDs will be replaced at a cost of $10 paid to the cashier.

The Library

The Library, located on the third floor of the General Technologies Building, Building B, provides access to library resources (including popular reading materials/music/movies, etc.) and reference services to students, college personnel, alumni, and the local community. The Library’s mission is to provide important information, resources, and services in a constantly changing, friendly, and dynamic 21st century learning atmosphere (with emphasis on delivering high-quality responsiveness, proven dependability, and excellent customer service). Primarily supporting the academic programs and courses of instruction at Terra State Community College, the Library’s collections contain books, selected online government publications, streaming media services (music/movies), digital publications, digital photos/images, magazines (print/online), and newspapers (print/online).

The Library also features a full-service computer lab, copy services, community gathering/meeting spaces, and “the clinic” - a special interactive human anatomy center for health sciences students,

The Terra State Community College Library is a member of OhioLINK, Ohio’s academic library consortium, which allows patrons to request and borrow materials from 120 college and university libraries from across the state, as well as the State Library of Ohio, through a combined central catalog. Additionally, through OhioLINK membership, Terra State is able to provide access to online research databases, electronic journals, ebooks, and students can request further materials from the 28 public libraries of SearchOhio. Borrowing and Accessing Materials

A Terra State Community College ID is required for students to borrow or renew materials from the Library.

For off-campus access to the restricted online resources found on the Library’s web page, students must be registered for at least one course for the current or upcoming semester, and follow the on-screen login instructions.

Library materials circulate for the following loan periods:

Books: 21 days with three renewals

Textbook Reserves: 4 hours with no renewals

Magazines/Newspapers: print versions to be used within the library; online versions also available.

OhioLINK Materials: For students, book materials may be borrowed for 21 days with six renewal periods of 21 days each (as long as no other holds have been placed on the item, and the lending library does not request that the book material be returned immediately); OhioLINK media materials circulate for 7 days and with three renewals (again, as long as no other holds have been placed on the item, and the lending library does not request that the media material be returned immediately).

Fines

Failure to return library materials either on or before the due date can result in the loss of library privileges, and/or the holding of grades, transcripts, and class registration by the Registrar/Cashier’s Office.  Every effort will be made to accommodate requests for additional time to use library materials (renewal), and special requests/circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Fines for overdue items accumulate at the following rates:

Books $0.10 per day 
Textbook Reserves $0.50 per hour 
OhioLINK Materials $0.50 per day with loss of interlibrary loan privileges until materials are returned. This a statewide OhioLINK policy with no exceptions.
Lost Items

TSCC owned lost items will incur a replacement cost of the item listed in the library catalog.

  OhioLink owned lost items will incur a replacement cost of $125 flat fee per item.

Parking

Students may park, without a permit, in any of Terra State’s non-restricted parking areas. Parking areas are located adjacent to all buildings for easy access.

Handicapped, visitor parking and other restricted parking areas (fire lanes) are clearly marked. Students, visitors, faculty and staff need a valid handicapped permit to park in handicapped parking areas. Visitor parking is for visitors to the campus who need only short-term access. Individuals parking in restricted spaces without a permit may be ticketed.

If a student, faculty, staff, or visitor need to leave their vehicle overnight in a campus parking lot, they need to contact Campus Safety & Security at 419-559-2253.

Personal or Family Emergencies

In the event of a personal or family emergency, Terra State’s staff will contact students on campus. College office telephones are staffed from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Student Activities Policy

Policy Statement

Terra State Community College (TSCC) provides students with a variety of opportunities for student activities. These activities are an important part of the college experience and allow students to engage in the life of the college.

Policy Details

  1. Recreational activities, intramural sports, and health and wellness activities are offered through the Student Activities Center.
  2. Musical groups and events are coordinated through the College’s Music department.
  3. Art shows are coordinated through the appropriate Academic Division departments.
  4. Technology events are offered through appropriate Academic Division departments.
  5. Student organizations are encouraged to organize activities to enhance campus student life and development.
  6. Student Organization advisors and the Dean of Student Success must approve campus activities sponsored by student organizations to ensure that College policies and procedures are being followed, that the activities are open to the student body, and that adequate funding is available for the activities.
  7. Campus activities planned by student organizations should request approval one month in advance of the planned event date.

Student Organizations Policy

Policy Statement

Terra State Community College (TSCC) has established the following policy to govern the creation, registration, and operation of student organizations for the benefit of all students in the college community. Recognized student organizations are the bridge for co-curricular activities in the college. This should provide an opportunity for personal development and enjoyment for members and the broader college community.

Policy Details

  1. All student organizations must abide by all federal, state, and local laws as well as college regulations.
  2. No organization with restrictive membership clauses discriminating on the basis of race, creed, ethnic identity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability, as defined by law, shall obtain or maintain registration status.
  3. All student organizations must document through a constitution and/or bylaws, the name of the organization, the organizations purpose, membership criteria, meeting procedures, and role/function or electing officers, duties of officers, and role/function of the organizations advisor.
  4. Only current registered students may hold office and solicit funds on campus on behalf of a registered student organization.
  5. Other persons may be admitted to non-voting membership if the organization’s constitution permits.
  6. A minimum of five (5) currently registered student members shall be required as a condition of registration. Certain organizations may seek exemption from this requirement through a formal request to the Senior Vice President for Innovation and Strategic Planning.
  7. The purpose(s) of a student organization must not conflict with the mission or established policies of the college.
  8. No student organization may use the name of any other student organization for any purpose.
  9. Student organizations must have faculty and/or staff advisors and provide for such advisors in the organizations constitution and/or bylaws.
  10. Advisors must be full or part-time faculty, staff, or administrators.
  11. Additionally, organizations may use community members as co-advisors.
  12. No registered student organization may expend any of its funds for any political purpose or in the support of any political candidates or issues whether federal, state, local, or college level.
  13. Registration of a student organization does not constitute endorsement, approval, or ratification by the college of any doctrine, act, or omission by the student organization.

Procedures

  1. Procedures for Registering a Student Organization
    1. Students desiring to create a student organization should meet with the Dean of Student Success to review the process to gaining recognized status, including an application packet with required forms and sample constitution/bylaws.
    2. An organization is required to produce evidence, by submitting a roster, that membership consist of a minimum of five (5) currently registered students at the time registration is sought and in order that registration be maintained.
    3. One (1) typed copy of the proposed constitution and/or bylaws and a list of officers are to be submitted to the Dean of Student Success.
    4. If there are no major corrections needed, the constitution is forwarded to Student Government for consideration. Registration is considered final after approval by Student Government.
    5. The approved constitution is kept on file in the Senior Vice President for Innovation and Strategic Planning’s Office. A copy is to be kept on file with the Dean of Student Success.
    6. Inactive organizations with no change in constitutions may petition Student Government for reinstatement. Any changes in a constitution and/or bylaws must be approved by Student Government. 
    7. Objection to registered status for any student organization may be filed with the Senior Vice President for Innovation and Strategic Planning.
    8. Appeal of a decision against registration of a student organization may be made by that organization to the Senior Vice President for Innovation and Strategic Planning.
  2. Privileges of Registered Student Organizations Registered student organizations are afforded the following privileges:
    1. Use of the name of the College and its titles. Use of the College’s symbols and logo must conform to College policy.
    2. Use of College facilities subject to the established written policies and procedures governing such use
    3. Petition for the use of College funds by submitting requests to the appropriate College officials.
    4. Petition for the use of student organizations funds by submitting requests to and receiving approval from Student Government.
    5. Services of The Office of the Senior Vice President for Innovation and Strategic Planning, including consultation and assignment of a mailbox.
    6. The opportunity to use College facilities for fund-raising activities. Those student organizations registered by the College must deposit all proceeds from such activities into their College accounts. Organizations not complying with those requirements will not be permitted to use College facilities for fund-raising activities.

Student Organizations

One of the best ways to get involved at Terra State is by joining a club or organization. While most of our organizations focus on a career path, we do have some just for fun. If you don’t see something that catches your eye, you can start one of your own too! Ever wanted to play Dungeons and Dragons but didn’t know where to look? Well look no further! The Dragons in Dungeons club is open to casual beginners and experienced players alike.

Health Information Technology Student Organization (HITSO)

The purpose of this organization is to inform Health Information Technology students above the events and issues affecting Health Information Technology and encourage students to get involved on a local, regional, and national level.

Medical Assisting Student Organization (MASO)

The purpose of this organization is to encourage medical assisting students to strengthen and demonstrate knowledge, skills, and professionalism necessary to be a successful medical assistant.

Multicultural Student Union (MCSU)

MCSU aims to foster unity and a climate of inclusion for all students while working with other recognized student organizations. The MSCU will focus on students’ social and cultural needs, emphasizing ethnicity, gender, and underrepresented student population concerns. The MSCU seeks to engage with all students to pursue a diverse and equitable student experience at Terra State Community College.

The MCSU will provide an energetic, peaceful, and safe environment where students from different cultures and nationalities can interact, work together, and learn about each other while promoting self and others’ appreciation.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

This organization is an honorary scholastic organization for community, junior and technical colleges. Students are invited to membership on the basis of scholarly achievement, leadership, citizenship, character, and faculty recommendation.

Physical Therapist Assistant Student Association  

The mission of PTASA is to inform Physical Therapist Assistant students about the events affecting Physical Therapist Assistant program in general and encourage students to get involved locally, regionally, and nationally. Our purpose is to create a pathway of communication between the faculty of the college of Physical Therapist Assistant and the students.

Proud Terra is a supportive, student-led organization that focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning and asexual issues. We are individuals representing the diverse gender and sexual orientation continuum co-creating a brave space to discuss identity, coming out, transitioning, relationships, struggles, and victories; a space to decompress, share, support and educate.

The Student Government is the governance body that provides a vehicle for student involvement in the affairs of Terra State Community College.

The Student Nurses’ Association is an organization that consists of student nurses currently enrolled in the nursing program. The purpose is to provide communication between faculty and students, provide endeavors to reach fellow students’ needs and interest in academic matters, and promote involvement in the community for the benefit of students and public.

Terra State Christian Fellowship

The purpose of Terra State Christian Fellowship is to create spaces to encounter Jesus, as we choose to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly (referencing Micah 6:8). We practice hospitality, facilitate scripture discussions, and have fun as we take steps forward on our spiritual journey.  We aim to create a safe place for students of all backgrounds to consider the life and teachings of Jesus.

TSCF is connected to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship which is a vibrant national campus ministry.

Terra State Drone Club

Our mission is to promote student enthusiasm and interest in remote controlled Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) with a focus on career readiness in the drone industry. We meet weekly to race, take aerial photos and videos, and/or modify and repair quadcopters of various types. We also take yearly field trips to places like the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio and ODOT’s UAS Center in Springfield, Ohio.

Terra State Esports Club

The mission of the Terra State Esports Club is to provide students with fun, competitive, and rewarding experiences that are an alternative to traditional activities and sports. The Club will build student relationships and confidence, provide a safe & social place to play, break down barriers between different groups of students, encourage collaboration, build problem-solving skills, and prepare students for the increasingly digital world around them.
