Prerequisite(s): LEN1100 An overview of the evolution, structure and practices of policing in the U.S. Topics include: the evolution of policing in the United States; the roles and duties of law enforcement officers at the federal, state, and local levels; the different styles of policing (watchman, order-maintenance, etc.); various duties in police operations (patrol, investigation and administration); problem-oriented and community-oriented policing styles; standards for ethical police practice; police discretion and policing; and how race and gender issues impact policing.
