Through reading and discussing selected texts, students will become familiar with key authors and works that represent American literature and the multiple voices within it. As a survey course, American Literature I is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the historical and cultural conditions that influenced the development and formation of American literature. It also employs several common techniques used to analyze a text. This approach can enhance the understanding and appreciation not only of American Literature, but of any text as well.
